LONG VOWEL PAIRS
PHONETIC RULES
GENERAL RULE => Vowel pairs
are usually pronounced as a single long vowel sound. The first vowel
is pronounced long and the second vowel is silent.
VOWEL PAIR | APPLICATION |
ai, ay | The letter a usually has the long sound in words, or syllables, with only two vowels where the first vowel is a and the second vowel is silent. For example, in the word tail the a is long and the i is silent. Also, in the word bay the a is long and the semivowel y is silent. |
ea, ee, ey | The letter e usually has the long sound in words, or syllables, with only two vowels where the first vowel is e and the second vowel is silent. For example, in the word pea the e is long and the a is silent. Also, in the word bee the first e is long and the second e is silent. In addition, in the word key the e is long and the semivowel y is silent. |
ie | The letter i usually has the long sound in words, or syllables, with only two vowels where the first vowel is i and the second vowel is silent. For example, in the word tie the i is long and the e is silent. |
oa, oe, ow | The letter o usually has the long sound in words, or syllables, with only two vowels where the first vowel is o and the second vowel is silent. For example, in the word boat the o is long and the a is silent. Also, in the word toe the o is long and the e is silent. In addition, in the word slow the o is long and the w, which acts here as a vowel, is silent. |
